Brooklyn Public Library Builds Mass Timber Branch in Canarsie

A new Brooklyn Public Library branch under construction in Canarsie will be one of New York’s first public mass timber buildings, ConstructConnect reported (7-31-26).

The library initially planned to renovate the existing branch. During preconstruction, however, the project team determined that providing flexible space and modern infrastructure would require a new building, according to Jonathan Fiato, senior director at construction manager Shawmut Design and Construction.

Shawmut is working with Mercer Mass Timber on supply and design assistance, while Metropolitan Walters will install the timber structure. The building will use exposed CLT and glulam, requiring specialized sequencing, protection, and coordination with other trades.

Designed by Studio Joseph, the two-story, 11,000-square-foot building will double the branch’s public space. It will include separate areas for adults, teens, and children, as well as a 50-person meeting room, recording studio, maker space, and outdoor terrace.

Other sustainability features will include rooftop solar panels and onsite stormwater management.
