US Job Openings and Labor Turnover Summary for June

On Tuesday, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the number of job openings changed little in June at 7.4 million, with the job openings rate at 4.4%.

The number of hires was unchanged at 5.3 million, while the hires rate changed little at 3.4%. Total separations changed little at 5.4 million, with the rate at 3.4%.

Within separations, quits were unchanged at 3.2 million, with a rate of 2.0%. Layoffs and discharges were unchanged at 1.8 million, with a rate of 1.1%, while other separations changed little at 353,000.

By establishment size, businesses with 1–9 employees and employers with 5,000 or more employees showed little or no change in job openings, hires, and separations rates.

Monthly Revisions

Monthly revisions result from additional reports received from businesses and government agencies since the last published estimates and from the recalculation of seasonal factors.

Revisions to May estimates show job openings were revised down by 57,000 to 7.5 million. Hires were revised up by 82,000 to 5.3 million, while total separations were revised up by 159,000 to 5.3 million. Within separations, quits were revised up by 88,000 to 3.2 million, and layoffs and discharges were revised up by 53,000 to 1.8 million.
