Rex Lumber, Brian Fehr Group, and Canada’s Peak Renewable BioEnergy Join Forces to Open New Plant in Dothan, AL

Dothan, Alabama, is now the home of a site dedicated to sustainable and renewable bioenergy, WTVY/News4 reported on Tuesday (6-4-24).

The project is a partnership between Rex Lumber Company and Brian Fehr Group and has led to the grand opening of Peak Renewable BioEnergy.

Peak Renewable BioEnergy is a Canadian company that says it is dedicated to harnessing the power of renewable resources and sustainable practices to reduce its carbon footprint and ensure a sustainable, clean energy future. To achieve its goal, Peak Renewables manufactures fibrous utility wood pellets as an economical substitute for coal.

The Dothan plant receives wood shavings from Rex Lumber plants in Alabama and Florida, then those shavings become wood pellets. After being created at the Dothan plant, the pellets are shipped to Europe.

“This is just an expansion of [that] process and allows us to take our by-products and further use them in an environmental way,” Caroline Dauzat, an owner of Rex Lumber, told WTVY/News4.

Wood pellets made at Peak Renewables are produced for use in already dedicated biomass plants, as well as in converted coal plants and co-fired coal plants.

In 2021, the latest data available, wood pellet exports reached $1 billion in the United States, WTVY/News4 reported. Peak Renewables says its Dothan project is the first step in its plan to continue growth across the Southern US.
