Musser Biomass and Wood Products to Expand Production of Dried Hardwood Chips and Sawdust in Virginia

Musser Biomass and Wood Products, a division of family owned and operated Musser Lumber Company, which specializes in the drying, surfacing, and planing of hardwood lumber for flooring and paneling, announced on Friday (6-30-23) that it plans to expand its operations in Wythe County, Virginia.

According to the report by Area Developemnt (6-30-23), the $7.5 million investment will more than double production of dried hardwood chips and sawdust the company supplies to composite decking manufactures, plastic extrusion companies, and BBQ and heating wood pellet companies. In turn, the company will also significantly increase its purchase volume of hardwood residuals from regional sawmills, which will create a new market for this operational byproduct.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services worked in conjunction with Wythe County and the Joint Industrial Development Authority of Wythe County to secure the project for the Commonwealth. The governor has approved a $75,000 grant from the Governor’s Agriculture and Forestry Industry Development (AFID), which Wythe County will match with local funds, to help fund the project.
