Hampton Lumber’s Fort St. James Forest Products (FSJFP) is bucking the trend of sawmills temporarily or permanently closing down in British Columbia. According to Burns Lake Lakes District News (4-9-23), on April 10th, FSJFP shipped its first load of lumber from its newly built sawmill.
In 2019, Hampton Lumber bought the original sawmill from Conifex. Upon the completion of the purchase, Hampton closed the old sawmill and demolished it and opened the new FSJFP sawmill during the pandemic in 2022.
The FSJFP sawmill is currently only operating one shift during the start-up, but the company is optimistic that start-up will go well, according to the report. A second shift will be added when the team and the mill are ready.
