Groupe Lebel to Cut Sawmill Production by 25% Starting in January

On Friday, Groupe Lebel said it will reduce sawmill production by approximately 25% beginning in January 2026, an indefinite curtailment representing about 200 million board feet of output.

The company said the decision reflects an exceptionally challenging market environment for the industry, citing weak demand in the US as well as export duties and tariffs approaching 45%. It will continue to monitor market conditions and adjust production planning as needed.

In a statement, Groupe Lebel CEO Frederic Lebel said:

“This decision, while difficult, is necessary to ensure the long-term strength and stability of our organization. We remain fully committed to our employees, our suppliers, and our business partners, and we will continue to navigate this challenging environment with responsibility and coherence.”
