Canfor Delays Final Decision on Rebuilding Its Houston Mill Due to Fiber Supply Issues

Canfor has delayed its final decision on whether it will build a new sawmill to replace its recently closed Houston, BC, site.

In a short paragraph included within Canfor’s 2023Q2 results, the company said that the planning and technical work on a new Houston facility has been completed, but access to fiber supply remains unknown:

“Work to assess the availability of an adequate supply of economic fiber to support an investment of this size and scope is continuing. This work includes discussions with the Government of BC to seek assurances on the long-term fiber supply outlook for the region. Management hopes to conclude these discussions within the coming weeks.”

Thursday afternoon’s announcement continues a period of uncertainty for the mill site, which began this past winter when the company announced the spring closing of its existing sawmill.
