Fire Destroys Pierson Lumber Sawmill in Clay County, West Virginia

A fire on Tuesday destroyed the historic Pierson Lumber Sawmill in Clay County, West Virginia, according to local reporting by West Virginia MetroNews (3-28-23). The sawmill, which predominately produced hardwood lumber products, was built in 1943 by the current owner’s grandfather.

Fire fighters told MetroNews that a majority of large wooden building was engulfed in flames when they arrived. Clay Volunteer Fire Department Chief Mike Scott said the building and its contents are a total loss. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The sawmill had 32 employees and over a dozen subcontractors working at the site. According to the report, the owner is not yet certain whether he will rebuild the mill.
