US Imposes 25% Tariff on Certain Brazilian Goods Beginning July 22

On Wednesday, July 15, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced final action, at President Trump’s direction, to impose a 25% tariff on certain goods imported from Brazil under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. The tariff will take effect Wednesday, July 22.

The action does not cover articles or parts of articles already subject to Section 232 tariffs, including softwood lumber. Other wood products—including softwood panels, engineered wood, and moulding/millwork—will be subject to the new 25% tariff.

Ambassador Greer said the action follows an Office of the US Trade Representative investigation that found certain Brazilian measures unreasonable and burdensome or restrictive to US commerce. The investigation covered digital trade and electronic payment services, preferential tariffs, anti-corruption enforcement, intellectual property protection, ethanol market access, and illegal deforestation.
