State-Level Construction Employment Data for July

A closer look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) July nonfarm payroll report, with analysis by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), shows that construction sector employment—including both residential and nonresidential—rose in 28 states in July. Meanwhile, 18 states and the District of Columbia reported job losses, and four states saw no change.

Overall, the construction industry added a net 22,000 jobs in July. Illinois posted the largest gain, adding 3,200 construction jobs, while Texas recorded the largest loss, shedding 3,400. On a percentage basis, Mississippi led with a 1.9% increase, while West Virginia experienced the steepest decline at 2.8%.

Compared to a year ago, US construction employment rose by 82,000 jobs, a 1.0% increase. Texas saw the largest year-over-year gain, adding 17,500 jobs, while California posted the largest loss, down 6,700. Louisiana led all states in percentage growth, with construction employment rising 11.4%, while Alaska had the sharpest percentage decline at 3.7%.
