Southern Pine Lumber Exports Fall in May
What’s the Story With May 2025 Southern Pine Exports?
According to the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service’s Global Agricultural Trade System, with additional analysis from the Southern Forest Products Association (SFPA), Southern pine lumber exports—both untreated and treated—fell 14.8% to 48.9 MMBF in May and were down 18% year-over-year.
Year-to-date, Southern pine exports totaled 228.6 MMBF, 7% below the same period in 2024.
Measured by dollar value, Southern pine exports in May declined 30% year-over-year to $16.8 million and were down 25.9% from the previous month. Mexico was the top destination for the first five months of 2025 with $25.6 million, followed by the Dominican Republic at $18.4 million and India at $6 million.
Treated lumber exports rose 2% year-over-year to $13.4 million but were down 12% from April. The Leeward-Windward Islands led treated lumber exports year-to-date with $9.4 million, followed by Jamaica at $5.9 million and Barbados at $5.7 million.
Softwood lumber imports declined 3.6% year-over-year to 1.2 MMBF in May and were 1.9% lower than in April.
