Pfeifer opens new sawmill in Kajaani
The Pfeifer Group has completed construction of a new sawmill for its subsidiary, Pölkky Oy, in Kajaani, Finland.
Now operational, the facility has more than doubled its annual production capacity—from 200,000 m3 to 450,000 m3 of sawn timber. Among the most advanced and efficient sawmills in the Nordic region, the new facility marks a key step in Pfeifer’s growth strategy.
According to Pfeifer, the construction of the mill hall incorporated numerous timber products. Pölkky itself supplied glulam in small cross-sections along with various solid-timber components, while large custom elements—such as props and beams—were sourced from Versowood. In total, 970 m³ of CLT from Pfeifer was installed.
The project also overcame significant logistical challenges. For example, approximately 2,200 m2 of facade elements were manufactured at Pfeifer’s Schlitz mill in Hesse, Germany, transported to EcoTimber for varnishing, and then delivered to Kajaani. Assembly of the timber structure was carried out by carpenters from MHB. Despite the short timeline, all teams worked together seamlessly.
At the Kajaani site, Pölkky processes Nordic pine and spruce. The new, highly automated saw line is operated by a team of around 100 employees and is now running at full annual capacity of 450,000 m3. The investment supports Pfeifer and Pölkky’s strategy of expanding production, increasing international reach, and enhancing value-added output.
