On Wednesday, Metsä Group announced that the change negotiations concerning its Merikarvia, Finland, sawmill of Metsä Fibre, part of Metsä Group, have ended and the company has decided to close down the operations by the end of June.

“The Merikarvia sawmill has reached the end of its technical service life, which is why we’re closing down its operations,” Metsä Fibre CEO Ismo Nousiainen said.

The annual production capacity of the Merikarvia sawmill is approximately 220,000 m3 of pine sawn timber. The sawmill uses about 455,000 m3 of wood annually.

According to the press release, the negotiations began in January and concerned all 79 employees. Efforts will be made to offer the permanent personnel jobs in other production plants where possible, and decisions on dismissals will be taken by June 30th.
