UK’s Velindre Cancer Center Takes Shape With Timber Frame Completion

Started in June, tork on the new Velindre Cancer Center in Wales has reached a major milestone with the installation of its large timber frame, Nation.Cymru reported (11-5-25). The structure will form the internal Lolfa, or living room—a central space that extends the full height of the building and serves as the main hub for patients and visitors.

One of the largest timber frames of its kind in the UK, the structure forms the heart of the building, extending its full height. Every aspect of the center’s design, including the Lolfa built by principal contractor Sacyr UK, is centered on the needs of patients, staff, families, and carers.

Project Director David Powell called the installation “a hugely exciting milestone,” adding that it “reflects our commitment to building a modern, low carbon hospital that places people at its heart.”

Designed by White Arkitekter, the timber frame aims to create an open, flexible, and naturally calming space. The use of CLT and glulam will support the center’s goal of becoming one of the UK’s most environmentally responsible health facilities.
