Toronto Metropolitan University Breaks Ground on Mass Timber Student Center
Construction of Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) new mass timber Student Wellbeing Center (SWC) is officially underway, Daily Commerical News reported (5-9-25).
Designed by Siamak Hariri of Hariri Pontarini Architects, the project includes the preservation and restoration of the heritage O’Keefe House, built in 1855. A new eight-story hybrid mass timber tower will rise from the site, incorporating exposed timber decking and green terraces.
The 33,360-square-foot building will feature a fritted glazed façade on its north and west elevations. The project is targeting Fitwel 2-star certification and is scheduled to open in 2027.
The $42 million development is primarily funded through a student health and well-being fee.
