Fire Causes Damage at Kalesnikoff Lumber in Castlegar, BC

No one was injured in a fire on Wednesday at Kalesnikoff Lumber in Castlegar, BC, although damage is described as “significant,” MyKootenayNow reported (8-6-25).

Tarrys Fire Chief Greg Patterson said five fire departments responded and spent about three hours on scene. The sawmill’s own fire brigade began an initial attack before crews arrived.

The fire began when a fan bearing overheated in a mechanical room, spreading by radiant heat into the walls.

“There’s definitely some significant damage to the mill, but things that can be repaired and replaced, and the structure itself is still sound,” Patterson said, adding that Kalesnikoff is assessing the damage, but he does not believe it will prevent operations from continuing.

In a statement on Facebook, Kalesnikoff said:

“Thank you to our team for your quick action, and to local fire departments for your immediate and thorough response. Primarily because of the power outage, the mill was closed [Wednesday] afternoon and will re-open [Thursday].

Most importantly, we’re grateful everyone is safe; that the building and equipment were not seriously damaged; and that the overall response was quick and effective.”
