US Weekly Jobless Claims Increase in the Week Ending November 25th

The US Department of Labor reported on Thursday (11-30-23) that the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 218,000 during the week ending Saturday, November 25th. This is an increase of 7,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 211,000 (originally reported as 209,000). The 4-week moving average was 220,000—a decrease of 500 from the previous week’s revised average of 220,500 (originally reported as 220,000).

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment, known as continuing claims, during the week ending November 18th was 1,927,000. This is an increase of 86,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 1,841,000 (originally reported as 1,840,000) and the highest level for insured unemployment since November 27th, 2021, when it was 1,964,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,865,750—an increase of 28,750 from the previous week’s revised average of 1,837,000 (originally reported as 1,836,750) and the highest average since December 11th, 2021, when it was 1,888,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.3% for the week ending November 18th, an increase of 0.1% from the previous week’s unrevised rate.
