US Weekly Jobless Claims Increase for the Week Ending September 9th

The US Department of Labor reported on Thursday (9-14-23) that the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 220,000 during the week ending Saturday, September 9th. This is an increase of 3,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 217,000 (originally reported as 216,000). The 4-week moving average was 224,500—a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week’s revised average of 229,500 (originally reported as 229,250).

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment, known as continuing claims, during the week ending September 2nd was 1,688,000. This is an increase of 4,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 1,684,000 (originally reported as 1,679,000). The 4-week moving average was 1,697,000—a decrease of 5,750 from the previous week’s revised level of 1,702,750 (originally reported as 1,701,500).

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.1% for the week ending September 2nd, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate.
