US Weekly Initial Jobless Claims Trend Lower in the Week Ending September 21st

On Thursday, the US Department of Labor reported that the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 218,000 during the week ending Saturday, September 21st. This is a decrease of 4,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 222,000 (originally 219,000). The 4-week moving average was 224,750—a decrease of 3,500 from the previous week’s revised average of 228,250 (originally 227,500).

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment, known as continuing claims, during the week ending September 14th was 1,834,000. This is an increase of 13,000 from the previous week’s revised total of 1,821,000 (originally 1,829,000). The 4-week moving average was 1,835,750—a decrease of 6,500 from the previous week’s revised average of 1,842,250 (originally 1,844,250).

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2% for the week ending September 14th, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate.
