On Thursday, the US Department of Labor reported that the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 223,000 during the week ending Saturday, January 18. This is an increase of 6,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 217,000. The 4-week moving average was 213,500—an increase of 750 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 212,750.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending January 11 was 1,899,000. This is an increase of 46,000 from the previous week’s revised total of 1,853,000 (originally 1,859,000) and the highest level for insured unemployment since November 13, 2021, when it was 1,974,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,865,750—an increase of 500 from the previous week’s revised average of 1,865,250 (originally 1,866,750).
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2% for the week ending January 11, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate.
