U.S. Home Size Continue to Shrink but First Time Home Buyers Have a List of Must Haves

After increasing in size from 2010 to 2015, the average U.S. home size has fallen steadily for the past four years (2016 to 2019). The average house built in 2019, was actually the smallest since 2011. The smaller trend is proof that home builders are diligently working to meet the demand for smaller homes and are trying to shift their production mix towards more entry-level, first time home buyers needs. But what do first time home buyers really want?  At International Builders’ Show (IBS) a survey was conducted and the results were eye opening. To start nearly 75% of all those surveyed wanted single-family detached homes.
