State-Level Construction Employment Data for June

A closer look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) June nonfarm payroll report, with additional analysis from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), shows that construction sector employment—including both residential and nonresidential—rose in 21 states in June. Meanwhile, 26 states and the District of Columbia reported job losses, and three states (Hawaii, Mississippi, and New Hampshire) saw no change.

Overall, the construction industry added a net 15,000 jobs in June. California posted the largest gain, adding 3,800 construction jobs, while Texas recorded the largest loss, shedding 4,100. On a percentage basis, Montana led with a 1.9% increase, while South Dakota experienced the steepest decline at 1.6%.

Compared to a year ago, US construction employment rose by 21,000 jobs, a 1.5% increase. Texas saw the largest year-over-year gain, adding 20,900 jobs, while Washington posted the largest loss, down 11,300. New Mexico led all states in percentage growth, with construction employment rising 14.8%, while Washington had the sharpest percentage decline at 5.0%.
