State-Level Employment Situation: January 2025
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics’ State Employment and Unemployment Summary, with additional analysis provided by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), shows that construction sector employment (both residential and nonresidential) increased in 23 states in January. Conversely, 21 states reported job losses in the sector, while the six remaining states and the District of Columbia reported no change.
Overall, the construction industry added a net 2,000 jobs in January. Utah saw the largest monthly increase, adding 3,300 construction jobs, while Florida experienced the largest loss, down 5,100 jobs. In percentage terms, Idaho had the highest increase at 4.0%, while Arkansas recorded the steepest decline at 1.6%.
Year-over-year, US construction sector employment rose by 178,000 jobs, a 2.2% increase. Texas added the most jobs, up 19,800, while California saw the largest decline, losing 27,600 jobs. Idaho posted the highest annual growth rate at 11.1%, while Massachusetts had the sharpest decline at 3.9%.
