State Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey Released for January

On Tuesday (3-21-23), the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released it State Job Openings and Labor Turnover report for January.

In January, job openings rates declined in 13 states and the District of Columbia, increased in 3 states, and were little changed in 34 states. The largest decreases in job openings occurred in California, down 163,000, Texas, down 98,000, and Michigan, down 78,000. The largest job increases occurred in Florida, up 59,000, Georgia, up 48,000, and New Hampshire, up 5,000. Nationally, the number of job openings fell 410,000 over the month of January.

The BLS is reporting that in January hires increased in 8 states, declined in 3 states, and were little changed in 39 states and the District of Columbia. The largest increases in hire levels occurred in California, up 87,000, Pennsylvania, up 38,000, and Ohio, up 35,000. The largest decreases occurred in Missouri and North Carolina, down 32,000 each, and Minnesota, down 24,000. Nationally, the BLS says the number of hires was little changed.

In January, the total number of separations increased in 5 states, decreased in 4 states, and was little changed in 41 states and the District of Columbia. Georgia led the way with 36,000 separations, followed by North Carolina reporting 34,000 separations and Minnesota with 21,000. Indiana reported the largest decrease at 17,000, followed by Iowa at 12,000 and Utah at 11,000. Nationally, the number of total separations was little changed in January.
