President Trump Pauses “Reciprocal” Tariffs for 90 Days, but Raises China’s Tariff to 125%
On Wednesday, President Trump announced a 90-day pause on the steep “reciprocal” tariffs announced last week, opting instead for a lower 10% baseline tariff, Fortune reported (4-9-25).
However, Trump said tariffs on China would not be paused and would instead rise to 125% “based on the lack of respect” the country has shown world markets. The tariffs on China were previously hiked to 104% at 12:01 AM ET on Wednesday.
Trump said that 75 countries have contacted the US to negotiate new trade deals. Among them is Vietnam, which was hit with a 46% tariff and has reportedly offered to eliminate all tariffs on US imports, according to a previous social media post by Trump. Other countries seeking to negotiate include South Korea and Japan, which were hit with tariffs of 25% and 24%, respectively.
The White House later clarified that the 10% baseline tariff will continue to exempt Canada and Mexico for USMCA-compliant goods, including wood products.
