Canadian Industrial Product and Raw Materials Price Indices for March

On Thursday, Statistics Canada (StatCan) released the Industrial Product and Raw Materials Price Indices for March.

Industrial Product Price Index (IPPI)

The IPPI rose 2.4% in March, following a 0.6% increase in February. Year-over-year, the IPPI was up 7.8%, marking its 18th consecutive annual increase.

The monthly gain was mainly driven by energy and petroleum products, while chemicals and chemical products also increased. Lower prices for primary non-ferrous metals and meat, fish, and dairy products partly offset the increase.

Excluding energy and petroleum products, the IPPI fell 0.5% in March.

Raw Materials Price Index (RMPI)

The RMPI rose 12.0% in March. Prices for crude energy products increased 41.1%, driving the overall gain. Excluding crude energy products, the index rose 0.2%.

Year-over-year, the RMPI was up 23.6%. Excluding crude energy products, the index increased 21.8%.
