US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update for June 24th

On Monday, the US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported that there are currently 16 uncontained, large wildfires being fully suppressed and 19 wildfires being managed under strategies other than full suppression. Approximately 7,000 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the US. The National Preparedness Level remains at a 2 out of 5.

Complex incident management teams (CIMT) are assigned to the South Fork Fire in New Mexico and the Pioneer Fire in Washington, on which a transfer of command to another CIMT will occur tomorrow, NIFC reported. In addition, a Type 1 incident management team is assigned to the Post Fire in California, and command of the Aero Fire in California was transferred back to the local unit on Sunday.

As of Monday, 34 active large wildfires have burned 174,507 acres in 10 states. Fifteen wildfires are burning in Alaska; 4 each in California and New Mexico; 2 each in Arizona, Oregon, Utah, and Washington; and 1 each in Colorado, Florida and North Carolina. The total number of wildfires fires contained stands at 2.

The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:

  • Year-to-date through June 24th, 19,834 wildfires were reported, and they have burned 2,213,017 acres.
  • During the same period last year, 22,519 wildfires were reported, and they had burned 655,999 acres.
  • The 10-year average (2014–23) for the same period is 25,556 wildfires and 1,523,635 acres burned. The above-average number of acres is partially due to the wildfires in Texas in late February.
