US, Canada, Mexico Rail Traffic Data for the Week Ending September 2nd
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported on Wednesday (9-6-23) that for the week ending on Saturday, September 2nd, US rail traffic was 476,851 carloads and intermodal units. Year-over-year, the volume is 5.4% lower.
The AAR breaks it down as 231,113 carloads, down 1.6%, while US weekly intermodal volume was 245,738 containers and trailers, down 8.7%.
The AAR notes that out of the 10 carload commodity groups, 5 posted year-over-year gains during the period. They include motor vehicles and parts, metallic ores, and metals and chemicals. The five that fell year-over-year included coal, grain, and nonmetallic minerals.
Total combined US rail traffic for the first 35 weeks of 2023 was 16,173,208 carloads and intermodal units, a decline of 4.9% compared to the same time period in 2022.
Canadian railroads reported 89,904 carloads for the week, an increase of 2.2%, but intermodal units were down 14.6% to 10,360 containers or trailers.
Mexican railroads reported 16,321 carloads for the week, an increase of 9.2%, while intermodal units dropped 3.5% to 10,360 intermodal units.
