US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update for September 21

The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported that 46 new wildfires were reported nationwide on Sunday, September 20, including three large new incidents

Firefighters are working to contain 33 uncontained large fires, with more than 20,000 personnel assigned to incidents, including 161 crews, 435 engines, and 65 helicopters. The National Fire Preparedness Level remains at 3 out of 5.

As of Sunday, 33 large wildfires were burning nationwide, with one partially contained.

Washington led with eight active fires; Oregon had six; California had five; Montana and Texas had three each; Colorado had two; and Arkansas, Idaho, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Wyoming had one each.

The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:

• Year-to-date through September 21, 56,651 wildfires have been reported, burning 8,542,800 acres.
• During the same period last year, 50,849 wildfires were reported, burning 4,449,158 acres.
