State-Level Construction Employment Posts Gains in August

A closer look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) August nonfarm payroll report, with analysis by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), shows that construction sector employment—including both residential and nonresidential—rose in 31 states in August. Meanwhile, 16 states and the District of Columbia reported job losses, and three states saw no change.

Overall, the construction industry added a net 22,000 jobs in August. Ohio posted the largest gain, adding 4,600 construction jobs, while Colorado recorded the largest loss, shedding 2,200. On a percentage basis, Mississippi led with a 2.6% increase, while Rhode Island experienced the steepest decline at 1.3%.

Compared to a year ago, US construction employment rose by 120,000 jobs, a 1.5% increase. Ohio saw the largest year-over-year gain, adding 17,800 jobs, while California posted the largest loss, down 6,900. Louisiana led all states in percentage growth, with construction employment rising 12.7%, while New Hampshire had the sharpest percentage decline at 3.7%.
