US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update for July 28

On Monday, the US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported six new large wildfire incidents in the past day, bringing the total to 43 active large incidents nationwide.
The National Fire Preparedness Level has been raised to a 4 out of 5. More than 11,800 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the country.
Two fuels and fire behavior advisories remain in effect: (1) Nevada, highlighting very dry fine fuels and above-normal grass loading, and (2) south central Utah and surrounding areas, where critically dry fuels and recent lightning ignitions have led to rapid fire growth.

As of Monday, there are currently 43 large wildfires or emergency response ongoing, and none of these fires are contained.
There are currently 11 wildfires burning in Alaska; 5 each in Arizona, Colorado, and Washington; 3 each in California, Oregon, and Wyoming; 2 each in Idaho, New Mexico, and Utah; and 1 each of Nevada, South Dakota, and Georgia.
The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:
- Year-to-date through July 28, 39,789 wildfires have been reported, and they have burned 3,030,046 acres.
- During the same period last year, 21,211 wildfires were reported, and they had burned 4,247,895 acres.
- The 10-year average (2015–24) for the same time period is 33,023 wildfires and 3,664,394 acres burned.
