US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update for February 13

The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported that as of Friday, February 13, 27 large fires are actively burning across the country, with 27 new large incidents reported. Sixteen large fires remain uncontained, and 756 personnel are assigned nationwide.

The National Fire Preparedness Level remains at 1 out of 5.

Wildland firefighters continue to face active conditions in several regions. Most activity remains in the Southern Area, where 557 new fires were reported last week. Oklahoma and Florida are experiencing grass, brush, and timber fires with active behavior, and several incidents have threatened structures. In the Southwest, two large fires in New Mexico exhibited periods of extreme fire behavior, including running and torching.

As of Friday, there are 26 large wildfires or emergency responses ongoing. Of these, 16 are classified as large wildfires, and 13 are partially contained.

Oklahoma leads with 8 active fires; Florida has 4; New Mexico has 2; and Louisiana and North Carolina each have 1.

The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:

  • Year-to-date through February 13, 2026, 5,089 wildfires have been reported, burning 85,696 acres.
  • During the same period last year, 3,628 wildfires were reported, burning 87,142 acres.
  • The 10-year average (2016–25) for the same period is 2,805 wildfires and 54,619 acres burned.
