US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update for August 4
National Fire News: August 4, 2025
On Monday, the US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported five large new incidents.
The National Fire Preparedness Level was lowered to 3 out of 5 on July 29. Nationwide, 11,287 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents. Resources include 242 crews, 575 engines, 112 helicopters, and 7 complex incident management teams.
Daily Statistics
As of Monday, 39 large wildfires or emergency responses are active across the US. Only two are partially contained.
Arizona leads with seven wildfires currently burning; Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, and Washington each have five; California has four; Alaska and Utah each have three; New Mexico has two; and Florida, Montana, Oklahoma, and Oregon each have one.
The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:
- Year-to-date through August 4, 41,733 wildfires have been reported, and they have burned 3,396,344 acres.
- During the same period last year, 22,944 wildfires were reported, and they had burned 4,718,357 acres.
- The 10-year average (2015–24) for the same time period is 34,785 wildfires and 4,067,913 acres burned.
