Auckland’s Tallest Timber Tower Set for Construction in 2027

In Auckland, New Zealand, the city’s tallest timber building is set to rise after the James Kirkpatrick Group (JKG) secured consent to construct an 11-story cross-laminated timber (CLT) development in the city center, Wood Central reported (8-4-25).

Designed by Fearon Hay, the project is aiming for a 6 Green Star rating—one of the highest standards for environmentally sustainable construction.

Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2027, following an agreement reached on Friday between JKG and the Auckland Council. The deal comes after JKG took the council to court earlier this year to challenge the initial rejection of the project.

“JKG has worked collaboratively with council representatives to address their concerns and agree on a resolution,” JKG managing director James Kirkpatrick said. “Aucklanders can feel confident there has been a robust process to reach this resolution.”

An economic impact report estimates the development will inject A$135 million into the local economy and create more than 1,000 jobs during its four-year construction phase. Once completed, it is expected to contribute an additional $13.3 million annually to the precinct.
