BC Expands Value-Added Manufacturing Program to Secure Fiber for Businesses

On Monday, BC announced that it is expanding the BC Timber Sales Value-Added Manufacturing Program by creating a dedicated category to secure fiber for custom cutters and processors.

Custom cutters and processors operate within the value-added wood manufacturing sector but do not own sawmilling facilities. They partner with other manufacturers to produce specialty products, including customer-specific lumber, Japanese temple components, windows, and doors.

The program was launched in January 2023 with 10% of BC Timber Sales’ timber supply dedicated to small and medium-sized secondary manufacturers. The available supply was doubled to 20% in 2025.

The existing program is limited to value-added manufacturers with little or no forest tenure that own or lease production facilities. The new category will allow eligible custom cutters and processors to access timber through the program.

BC said the expansion supports recommendations from Canada’s Forest Sector Transformation Task Force and is intended to strengthen timber-supply certainty, local employment, and value-added manufacturing.
