81 Large Wildfires Continue to Burn in the Western US — Only 1 Currently Listed as Contained

The National Interagency Fire Center reported today (9-13-21) that there are 81 large fires or complexes currently burning in the West and Minnesota. New large fires were reported in California and Wyoming. Many of the large fires in California continue to display active fire behavior and the Monument Fire has gained about 1,300 additional acres in just one day.

As of today, the total number acres actively burning are at 3,150,696. Fires listed as contained are now down to 1.

Year to date through September 13, 2021, a total of 44,461 wildfires have been reported and they have consumed 5,567,600 acres. In comparison with the same period in 2020, which was considered a ‘bad’ fire season, 42,109 wildfires were reported and they had consumed 6,068,370 acres. The breakdown per state of wildfires is as follows: Idaho, 22; Montana, 15; California, 13; Washington, 11; Oregon, 8; Wyoming, 6; Nevada, 2; Utah, 2; Colorado, 1; and Minnesota, 1.
