Ontario Invests CA$17 Million to Support Kapuskasing Paper Mill

On Friday, Ontario said it will invest an additional CA$16.8 million to support the continued operation of the Kapuskasing Paper Mill, protecting nearly 300 mill jobs and thousands of indirect jobs across the regional forestry sector.

The province said the announcement follows weeks of provincially led talks with Kap Paper and the federal government, after which Ottawa agreed to provide $12 million in new support. The joint funding is intended to stabilize operations in the near term while the company develops a long-term plan, including product diversification and modernization.

As a key link in northeastern Ontario’s forestry supply chain, Kap Paper’s continued operation will help safeguard about 2,500 direct and indirect forestry jobs at regional sawmills and across the sector. The mill and its workforce are also an important part of the local tax base and broader regional economic development.

Ontario said the action aligns with its Sustainable Growth: Ontario’s Forest Sector Strategy and the Forest Biomass Action Plan to protect jobs, attract investment, and build resilient northern communities.
