Trump Administration Launches Tariff Investigation Into Imported Furniture

On Friday, President Donald Trump announced that his administration has launched a tariff investigation into imported furniture, a move that could result in new duties on a broad range of home products, Furniture Today reported (8-25-25).

It remains unclear whether any new tariffs would be imposed in addition to existing country-specific duties.

Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform:

“I am pleased to announce that we are doing a major Tariff Investigation on Furniture coming into the United States. Within the next 50 days, that Investigation will be completed, and Furniture coming from other Countries into the United States will be Tariffed at a Rate yet to be determined. This will bring the Furniture Business back to North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan, and States all across the Union.”

Furniture Today noted that any new tariffs would come at a difficult time for the sector. The furniture industry has faced slowing demand for more than a year as weaker housing activity and persistent inflation leave many consumers holding back on big-ticket purchases.

While some domestic manufacturers have reported stronger sales volumes under tariff pressure, others have struggled with higher input costs, particularly for imported components such as drawer guides and handles.
