Russian Timber Production Declined Between January and May

According to information recently released by the Russian Federal Statistical Service (Rosstat) and analysis by Global Wood Trade Network (7-10-23), Russian timber production between January and May declined by 10.1% year-over-year to 11.5 million cubic meters.

In May, sawlog production also fell 5.4% year-over-year and 7.8% month-over month.

Rosstat reports the following specific data on wood industry production year-to-date through May:

  • Timber production: 11.5 million cubic meters
  • Plywood production: 1,302 thousand cubic meters
  • Fiberboard: 248 million square meters
  • Particleboard: 4,362 thousand cubic meters
  • Wood fuel pellets: 535,000 tons
  • Cellulose: 3,603,000 tons

According to data provided to the Global Wood Trade Network by the St. Petersburg Commodity Exchange, from January through May, the trading volume of Russia’s domestic timber and construction materials sectors reached 2 million cubic meters. As of June, the exchange has signed more than 5,400 contracts with a total value of approximately 2.43 billion rubles.
