Ontario Creates Working Group to Advance Mass Timber and Modular Wood Construction
A new provincial working group will guide Ontario’s rollout of the Advanced Wood Construction Action Plan, a strategy aimed at expanding the use of modular, prefabricated, and mass timber systems while supporting forestry jobs and reducing construction timelines, Ontario Construction News reported (12-5-25).
The group’s mandate includes promoting wood-based building across sectors, identifying business opportunities, and helping attract investment to strengthen domestic supply chains. Members will also serve as sector champions for the plan.
Ontario has already committed targeted funding to support sector growth. Investments include more than CA$16 million for Element5, the province’s first fully automated CLT manufacturer; $10 million toward the future Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital, which will use un-encapsulated mass timber; and over CA$1 million for Limberlost Place at George Brown College, the province’s first mass-timber, net-zero institutional building.
Additional funding has supported the Canadian Wood Council’s training and code development work, FPInnovations’ research and collaboration efforts, and the University of Toronto’s mass-timber and steel hybrid academic tower.
