Metsä Group to Move Into Finland’s Tallest Wood-Structured Office Building
On Friday, Metsä Group announced that it will relocate its head office to Keilaniemi, Espoo, in November. The new building, Finland’s tallest wood-structured office building and one of the tallest of its kind in Europe, will accommodate approximately 600 employees.
Metsä Group calls its new headquarters Metsä Portti. The building features wood-clad façades, terraces, and green roofs, bringing natural materials into Keilaniemi’s office district, which is dominated by glass, steel, and concrete buildings.
The building, officially known as Keilaniemen Portti, is owned by Varma. It was designed by ARCO Architecture Company, with Jatke serving as the project management contractor.
Wood, including Metsä Group’s own products, has been used extensively throughout the building, including in columns, intermediate floors, roof elements, internal staircases, partition wall frames, façade and interior cladding, flooring, and terraces.
The building uses a hybrid construction approach that combines wood, concrete, and steel according to their respective applications. According to Metsä Group, the extensive use of wood has reduced the building’s carbon footprint by almost 50% compared with an equivalent building constructed entirely of concrete.
