Mass Timber Design Revealed for the Marengo Multimodal Hub in Toulouse, France
Bjarke Ingels Group and A+ Architects have revealed the design for the 12,000-square-meter (129,167-square-foot) Marengo Multimodal Hub in Toulouse, France, ArchDaily reported on Monday (3-25-24). The Hub is set to begin construction in 2026.
The project will expand the functionality of the city’s central station, Gare Matabiau, strengthening the area’s public transport networks by creating a hub for bus, railway, and metro—all connected under one roof. The design employs a mass timber structure and low-carbon concrete to ensure a sustainable intervention adapted to its environment.
Built mainly with mass timber, the hub’s structure gradually rises from its main entrance in the south, reaching a maximum height of 32 meters (105 feet) toward the rail tracks. This shape encourages visual connections across floors, allows natural daylight to enter the building’s lowest levels, and helps travelers to easily navigate the space.
