US Weekly Jobless Claims Decline

The US Department of Labor is reporting that the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 205,000 during the week ending on Saturday, January 7, 2023. This is a decrease of 1,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 206,000 (originally reported as 204,000). The 4-week moving average was 212,500—a decrease of 1,750 from the previously week’s revised level of 214,250 (originally reported as 213,750).

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment, known as continuing claims, during the week ending December 31, 2022, was 1,634,000. This is a decrease of 63,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 1,697,000 (originally reported as 1,694,000). The 4-week moving average was 1,679,500—a decrease of 8,750 from the previous week’s revised level of 1,688,250 (originally reported as 1,687,500).

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.1% for the week ending December 31, 2022, a decrease of 0.1% from the previous week’s unrevised rate.
