U.S. Population Growth Returns to Pre-Pandemic Levels
According to the latest estimates by the US Census Bureau, with analysis from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), the US resident population grew by 1.63 million in 2023 to a total population of 334.91 million. That represents a growth rate of 0.49%—just above 0.46% in 2019 but still slightly below 0.53% in 2018.
Regionally, the Northeast region was the only region to lose population, declining 0.08%. The South led with a 1.1% increase, while the Midwest population grew at 0.18% and the West grew at 0.17%.
At the state level, 42 states and the District of Columbia had a population increase over the year, the highest number since the start of the pandemic. Eight states lost population, according to Census estimates.
