US Job Cuts Rise in March

According to the Challenger, Gray & Christmas (CG&C) Job Cut Announcement Report released on Thursday, US-based employers announced 60,620 job cuts in March, a 25% increase from February’s 48,307 cuts. Year-over-year, announced cuts were down 78% from 275,247 in March 2025.

So far this year, companies have announced 217,362 job cuts, the lowest year-to-date total since 2022, when 55,696 were reported. This is down 56% from the 497,052 cuts announced through the first quarter of last year.

Significant reductions occurred in the following sectors:

  • Technology: 18,720 job cuts in March and 52,050 year-to-date
  • Transportation: 32,241 job cuts in March, up 703% from 4,017 in March 2025
  • Media and news: 352 job cuts in March and 1,492 year-to-date, down 18% from 1,820 in 2025Q1

Hiring Plans

Employers announced plans to add 32,826 jobs in March, up 157% from 12,755 in February and up 149% from 13,198 in March 2025. Just over 21% of the month’s announced hiring plans were seasonal summer jobs.

So far this year, employers plan to add 50,887 jobs, down 6% from the 53,867 announced through the first three months of 2025. Automotive leads all industries in hiring plans with 12,258, followed by entertainment/leisure with 8,261.
