Arbec Reopens Port-Cartier, QC, Sawmill to Process Log Inventories
Partial restart of the Arbec sawmill in Port-Cartier (translated)
Five months after halting operations, the Arbec sawmill in Port-Cartier, Quebec, has temporarily resumed operations to process previously harvested logs, Radio-Canada reported (5-15-26).
About a dozen employees are currently producing lumber and supplying forest residues to the mills of the Port-Cartier integrated park.
Julien Lampron, Executive Vice President of Organizational Development and Public Affairs at Rémabec, Arbec’s parent company, confirmed that the restart began on April 20.
“What we are currently doing is selling off the stock that has accumulated in the yard,” Lampron said.
The logs, harvested last year, are being processed into lumber while residuals are being supplied to the Bio Énergie AE pyrolytic oil plant and the Carbonity biochar plant, which has been shut down since November 2025.
Lampron said forestry operations themselves have not resumed. “There is no harvesting taking place in the territory allocated to the Port-Cartier plant,” he said.
