US Housing Starts Rise in June; Permits Decline

On Friday, the US Census Bureau reported that privately owned housing starts were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of 1,427,000 in June, a 19.0% increase from May’s revised 1,199,000 and 3.5% above the June 2025 level of 1,379,000. Single-family starts slipped 0.2% to 895,000. The rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 513,000.
Building permits, a forward-looking measure, were at a SAAR of 1,367,000 in June, a 3.0% decline from May and 2.3% below the June 2025 level of 1,399,000. Single-family authorizations fell 2.4% to 871,000. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 445,000.
Housing completions were at a SAAR of 1,392,000 in June, 3.3% above May’s revised 1,347,000 and 1.5% above the June 2025 level of 1,372,000. Single-family completions were 964,000, a 6.6% increase from May. The rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 413,000.
