Total Single-Family Permits Issued up 10.2% in the First Nine Months of 2020

Total single-family permits issued over the first nine months of 2020 nationwide has reached 713,286. Year-over-year that is an increase of 10.2%, with September 2019 level being at 647,244. On September 30^th 2020, single-family permits across all four regions ranged from an increase of 12.4% in the South to an increase of 6.2% in the Northeast. In regard to multifamily permits all four regions reported declines from -9.4% in the West and -2.7% in the Midwest. Between September 2019 and September 2020, 42 states experienced an increase in single family permits. South Dakota recorded the highest growth rate during the time period of 32.0% going from 2186 in 2019 to 2885 in 2020. The District of Columbia had a -22.2% decline to lead the loser bracket. Of note, the 10 states issuing the highest number of single-family permits accounted for 61.2% of the total number of single-family permits issued.
