State-Level Construction Employment Data for July

A closer look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) July nonfarm payroll report, with analysis by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), shows that construction sector employment—including both residential and nonresidential—rose in 22 states in July. Meanwhile, 22 states reported job losses, and six states and the District of Columbia saw no change.

Overall, the construction industry added a net 2,000 jobs in July. Colorado posted the largest gain, adding 3,800 construction jobs, while California recorded the largest loss, shedding 3,300. On a percentage basis, Oregon led with a 2.6% increase, while Wyoming experienced the steepest decline at 3.4%.

Compared to a year ago, US construction employment rose by 96,000 jobs, a 1.2% increase. Texas saw the largest year-over-year gain, adding 27,000 jobs, while California posted the largest loss, down 18,200. New Mexico led all states in percentage growth, with construction employment rising 14.3%, while New Jersey had the sharpest percentage decline at 4.9%.
