Canadian Consumer Price Index Rises 1.7% Year-Over-Year in July

On Tuesday, Statistics Canada (StatCan) reported that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 1.7% year-over-year in July, down from a 1.9% increase in June.

On a monthly basis, the CPI rose 0.3% in July. Seasonally adjusted, the increase was 0.1%.

Gasoline prices were the largest contributor to the slowdown in the all-items CPI, falling 16.1% year-over-year in July (following a 13.4% decline in June). Excluding gasoline, the CPI rose 2.5%, matching the increases in May and June.

Partially offsetting the slower headline rate were higher grocery prices and a smaller year-over-year decline in natural gas prices compared with June.
